Meet the man who penned

‘The Tattooed Soldier’ 

Héctor Tobar’s first novel selected as Cal State L.A.’s One Campus, One Book

Los Angeles, CA – Héctor Tobar, author of the suspense-filled novel “The Tattooed Soldier,” will discuss many themes of the immigrant experience along with the Los Angeles urban experience on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 3:15 - 4:20 p.m., in the University-Student Union Theatre, on the Cal State L.A. campus.

“The Tattooed Soldier” was selected by the University Library as Cal State L.A.’s 2008-09 One Campus, One Book—a campus-wide initiative to encourage the campus community to read and explore a single book collectively.

The Author

Héctor Tobar was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1963, to parents who had recently moved to the United States from Guatemala. Tobar attended University of California at Santa Cruz. After college, he worked briefly for a local paper in San Francisco before moving on to the Los Angeles Times. Over the course of his career, he has won a Pulitzer Prize with fellow staff members for his coverage of the Los Angeles riots. Tobar took time off from the paper in the mid-1990s in order to study creative writing at the University of California at Irvine, where he earned an M.F.A.

Tobar's first novel, The Tattooed Soldier, was written during this period. In this book, Tobar mines his own family's background, with an extensive back story that takes place in Guatemala City. He recounts the experiences of a leftist student named Antonio, his revolutionary wife Elena, and a peasant named Guillermo, who becomes the leader of a death squad that eventually kills Elena and her child. At the start of the novel, Antonio has been reduced to a homeless pauper living on the streets of Los Angeles, seeking his revenge on Guillermo. This goal is achieved during the height of the Los Angeles riots.

Free income tax assistance on Saturdays

Cal State L.A students help local community with tax returns

Los Angeles, CA – Can’t afford to hire an accountant to complete your income tax returns? The Cal State L.A. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program is here to help. For the eighth consecutive year, it will be offering free income tax services to low- to moderate-income individuals ($39,000 or less) who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Since 1998, Cal State L.A. students in the VITA program have provided free tax-preparation and filing services for fellow students and individuals from the surrounding community. The student-volunteers are all members of CSULA Beta Alpha Psi and Accounting Society. They are trained by the Internal Revenue Service and Cal State L.A. faculty in preparing basic Federal and State income tax returns. The Cal State L.A. VITA also offers free electronic filing.

The Cal State L.A. VITA site will be on the third floor of Salazar Hall, room 363. For the tax season, the site will remain open until Saturday, March 29. It operates on a first-come, first-serve basis on Saturdays, 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m. Appointments are not necessary.
